2001/2002
So far this has been the worst start to a season for some time. Losing to Newcastle (A), Liverpool (A), Arsenal (A), Chelsea (H), Bolton (H) and West Ham (H). However this was more to do with Sir Alex's tinkering of tactics and once he saw sense we started to recover with 4 straight wins in a row. This left us in 5th position but only six points adrift. United were also sitting on top of the second phase group after drawing with our old foes Bayern Munich  (1-1) and winning against Boavista (3-0).   United went on to lose the Semi-final of the Champions league on goal difference after drawing 2-2 at OT and 1-1 away to Bayer Leverkusen. This was one of only 2 seasons that United ended without a trophy.

2002/2003
What rollercoaster!
United started off  with 2 wins and 2 draws before losing two games in a row against Leeds and Bolton. Results were patchy as the team suffered injuries to key players and a dip in form. Although United played extremely well in the Champions league to top both the first and second phase groups, one of the highlights being back to back wins over Juventus.  However United once again fell short even though beating Real Madrid 4-3 at OT they lost 3-1 in Madrid and overall on aggregate by 5-6. At this time United were 8 points behind Arsenal in the premiership but having started a run of wins on the 28th Dec. they went on the rampage winning 10 and drawing 2 games including a 4-0 against Liverpool at OT and a comprehensive bashing of 3rd place Newcastle by 6-2 at St. James's Park before a 2-2 draw at Highbury which United technically won 2-1 as Henry was well off-side for Arsenal's equaliser.   As Arsenal faltered United just kept going and finally won the Championship by 5 points. Van Nistelrooy won the Golden Boot as top scorer ( 44 goals) in all competitions. He also won an award as the top scorer in the Champions League with 12 goals. Fans were shocked at the end of the season to learn that United had accepted a £25m offer for David Beckham to go to Real Madrid. He will be missed and fondly remembered as one of United's greatest players.

2003/2004
A season to forget as United finished in their worst position since the Premiership began!! The manager spent the summer chasing Ronaldhino to no avail as he decided to join Barcelona and instead brought in Kleberson, Djemba Djemba and Bellion. However these signings proved less than capable and only played in a few of United's matches during the season. Ole Solskjaer suffered a serious knee injury at the start of the season and only returned to the team in late March but with no time to get match fit. Also Roy Keane was suffering with a hip problem and was therefore rested too often especially for matches where United then lost. The season started off well winning the Community Shield against Arsenal on penalties after a 1-1 draw. United won seven of their first nine games, the exception being a 1-0 home loss to Southampton and the infamous 0-0 draw at home to Arsenal which saw Van Nistelrooy miss a winning penalty in the last minute. This saw an atrocious reaction from some Arsenal players who barged and punched Van Nistelrooy as he walked away from the goalmouth especially from Martin Keown. However the Arsenal players and the club were let off lightly by a soft FA disciplinary board obviously influenced by  David Dein (Arsenal's Chief Executive) who is a member of the FA's Board. However after a scrappy win away to Middlesbrough on 28th Dec. United were leading the premiership by 4 points. Then disaster as Rio Ferdinand came off in the second half against Wolves who then won 1-0. Ferdinand had decided to accept his 8 month ban for missing a drugs test and United rapidly lost their way. Up to this point United had the best defensive record in the league but without Rio the team became more brittle and with, injuries at times to key players, crucial points were lost. In the end United lost 9 games and ended the season in 3rd place 15 points behind champions Arsenal who remained unbeaten. United ended the season on a high by beating Millwall 3-0 with goals by Christiano Ronaldo and 2 from Van Nistelrooy to win the FA Cup for the 11th time.
